Feathered or Mostly Feathered Baby Birds
Can the bird hop even if it cannot fly?
Yes – Fledgling birds are birds that are old enough to be out of the nest to learn to fly. They will be on the ground hopping around maybe even flapping their wings from time to time. Parents feed them regularly though you may not see that happen. At night fledglings hide in bushes, flower beds, etc. until morning. Leave the baby alone and watch FROM AFAR or check on it in an hour. If you see the parents go to it, leave it alone, they are doing their job. If you don’t see parents but the baby has plenty of energy and does not seem to be weakening, they are probably feeding it and you are just missing them. If it does seem to get weaker, lays over on its side or appears to have trouble breathing, contact a rehabilitator immediately.

No – not hopping. If it is not hopping around, lays on its side or seems to have trouble breathing, contact a rehabilitator immediately.
